#TotD: America is the Land of the Free because mass executions do not occur in the streets. You may be randomly stopped with no cause for suspicion in clear disregard for constitutional limitations, but, by golly, you’re a ‘Merican! Drones flying over your ranch because you allegedly stole some cows? Big deal, at least you’re not rounded up and thrown in a concentration camp. You see, in America we have laws which apply equally to everyone. If you injure someone due to your own negligence you are held accountable.

Well… Unless you work for the government, that is.

The failed War on Drugs has cost unimaginable amounts of capital, well-being, and lives. Almost unfathomably, the U.S. prison population has exploded almost 800% over the last 30 years. Depending on your perspective (and how much faith you give your fellow man), this is either due to an increased presence of evil in mankind or else the numbers of acts deemed illegal have skyrocketed. In either case, the “Land of the Free” has the largest prison population on the face of the planet.

What is seemingly the favorite tactic for tackling the horrendous drug industry in America, local jurisdictions call in the SWAT team in the wee hours of the night and perform a no-knock raid. Why non-violent offenses require such heavy-handed tactics is beyond my intellectual capacity. As would be expected (but continually denied by the authorities), these commonly result in innocents being injured or killed.

baby3One such example occurred this past week in Georgia. Once again, SWAT arrived at the (correct) house at 3 o’clock in the morning. Without bothering to knock or look inside, they bashed open the door and threw in a flash bang. The incendiary grenade landed on a 19 month old baby who was fast asleep. Upon igniting, the device “blew open his face and his chest” according to his mother. The boy is now in a medically induced coma and it will be weeks before doctors know what long-term treatment he will need or if he will even survive at all.

Thankfully, with this being a land based on equal treatment under the law, the police are being charged with negligent assault. Oh wait a minute, I got that wrong. The county sheriff actually had the audacity to say, “The person I blame in this whole thing is the person selling the drugs. … They are no better than a domestic terrorist, because they don’t care about families.” So says the man in charge of a group who had previously murdered an innocent pastor.

Move along. Nothing to see here…
